BHAGAWAN BAHUBALI SWAMY, GOMMATAGIRI

Gomatagiri in Mysuru district’s Bettadoor village Illwala Hobli 5 kms from Illwala, Is popular for its mini Gomateshwara (also known as Bahubali) statue. The 16 feet high monolithic statue at Gomatagiri is said to be 750 years old and forms an important Jain centre of worship in the district. 

Gomatagiri,  the hill on which Gomateshwara statue is located is about 50 meters high from ground level.

Gommatagiri in an anceint Jain Heritage Centre near Mysore famous for its monolithic statue of 16 feet high Sri Gommateshwara situated at the top of a hill called Shravana Gudda. The standing snakes with their hoods om either side of the statue are very attractive and unique of the Gommata sculptors seen in India. Though we cannot find an details about the idols installation and its antiquity it is said that Chengalvas and Kongalvas enshrined the place.

Bhagwan Bahubali

Once a year Gomatagiri statue is treated with ‘Abhisheka’ or pouring of divine objects. This Maha Masthakabhisheka celebration usually falls in the month of November.

Offers panoramic view of the surrounding- parts of Mysuru city, KRS can be seen at a distance.

Statue carved in granite, using a single piece of stone during the Vijayanagara rule. Similar in design to Gomateshwara in Shravanabelagola.
